your opinion please

I’m generally opposed to watching TV and eating, as I’m sure most parents are, but a couple of weeks ago, we had lunch out and our waiter, after taking our order, brought out a portable DVD player loaded with a cartoon for K. Actually he had brought one for L, too, but that was a bit ridiculous and I sent him away with one.

So, of course K was intrigued and thrilled.

It was the first time any of us had eaten at a restaurant that provided this type of service. As expected, it kept her entertained during the meal, in her seat, and eating (for the most part). I’m on the fence whether this is a good thing or a bad thing while eating out.

What do you think? Would you say yes to this type of service if offered?

  1. My dad doesnt like us doing that too ~ eating and watching tv! hehe But i do enjoy a good meal on the dinner table without the tv on. Have a lovely merry happy week and love to you!

  2. Wow, I’ve never been to a restaurant that offered this. Although I’m sure the motive behind this is to have a quieter eating experience at this restaurant, I’m not sure I like it. I think kids are already bombarded with tv, computers, etc that having a meal without electronics is actually a good thing. Must be the old mom inside me talking. The younger me thinks this is pretty cool. But really, I don’t think I would want this at the table while we’re eating. I like to talk and be engaged with my kids during our meals. It’s nice to sit down and chat.

  3. Bad. Very bad. I think it’s important to teach kids how to eat out properly. And — to interact with others. We banned television at our house for the longest time. Now our battle involves cell phones — my kids are constantly texting on the sly. I can’t stand it!

  4. Wow…that’s a new on to me too–restaurant offering DVDs for kids. I’m not a mom, but I don’t like it. Eating time is eating time–time for family & friends. A snack + movie is OK. But main meals, like dinner, while watching TV/movies is not a good thing. Technology invades much of our lives already, I think it should be eliminated from meal times. I would just politely decline the DVDs at meal out. Very interesting topic, Floral! Happy Days ((HUGS))

  5. I know the right thing is to never watch TV while having dinner so you can have conversations and talk about the day. But I say everything in moderation. It’s okay to watch TV and eat at the same time once in a while!

  6. I think it is important for children to learn how to eat, have good manners, and communicate with family members during meals. My husband likes to eat and watch t.v., and I do admit that I sometimes will do that with him, when it is just the two of us. When we are having family meals he knows it is FAMILY time…a time to interact with each other as well as enjoying our meal. I have never been to a restaraunt that has this service. I think if kids act up while eating out this might be something to distract them. It might be a relief for some parents, and maybe less noise for the restaraunt in general??

  7. Wow! I’ve never heard of this either. while I don’t think eating while watching TV is always bad I do agree with Jodi: kids need to learn how to eat in restaurants politely.
