cookbook challenge: slow cooker beef and gravy over noodles

beef and gravy stew over noodles

I find slow cooker meals hit or miss. Some turn out great, others not so much. This one, a slow cooker beef and gravy stew over egg noodles, fortunately was a hit. The best part of a slow cooker meal, of course, is the prep it, turn it on, and forget about it, part. So simple.

The Taste of Home Slow Cooker Recipes book is a collection of recipes from home cooks. They are classic, home-style recipes created in everyday kitchens.

Of course, a cookbook challenge of mine wouldn’t be complete without a couple of changes. The recipe was pretty basic — a mixture of stewing beef, onion soup mix, beef stock and cream of mushroom soup. However, I wanted some vegetables in my stew, so I added carrots, celery and onions. I also tossed in some leftover sausage from the night before into the mix, and increased the amount of beef stock to compensate for the added ingredients. Six hours later, a creamy, stewy, gravy to pour over egg noodles. Very hearty and satisfying.

So what’s up for this week?

I’m trying Jamie tomorrow. From Jamie Oliver’s Dinners, the Farfalle with Carbonara and Spring Peas has caught my attention. Doesn’t that photo say it all? Check back next week for the results!

  1. I have found the same thing to be true of slow cookers. Either it works out just fine or it’s terrible. I applaud you’re bravery in making adjustments to the recipe. I have never made modification when using my Crockpot. I think my brother’s made that recipe from Jamie — he loves that cookbook. Try the roasted onions wrapped in bacon. One word….WOW.

  2. I love Jamie Oliver!

Same with me, some of my slow cooker recipes are spot on and others are just awful… It’s worth it tho because its so convenient…
